Burned and empty bodies, carcasses, of a dozen different animals, and only one cracked crystal brought from the tundra, it seems to be a…
Fire elemental heart
Every empty body has been burned from the inside out, where the heart should be there is blackened flesh, almost petrified or ossified, probably the crystal lodges in this cavity, supplanting the heart.
The crystal smells dead, putrid.
It does not react to any catalyst.
Only with a gust of wind does the crystal glow slightly, but only for an instant.
The wind, its essence, seems to be like blood to the crystal.
The veins of the hollow bodies are thicker and more durable than expected.
When left alone, air is sucked in and pushed through them, giving rise to a light breeze.
Rumors, tales and testimonies
These dull and dead crystals have been found before, at high altitude in the highest mountains, but recently more have been found near villages.
The townsfolk speak of lights coming from the nearby caverns, and of rodents and small strange-looking animals with light coming out of their eyes. They say these animals are infected by the crystals, which take their bodies as hosts to grow and evolve.
Some mountain explorers have seen floating lights with hearts of flame rising in the sky, and they talk about how these lights get dimmer and dimmer with altitude, they also say that a kind of scream is exhaled from these lights when their flame has burned out.
All of these may seem like unconnected facts, but my guess is that they are not as such.
Alchemical uses:
If the crystal is heated in a furnace, to the melting point of gold, it separates into a liquid and a solid sand, one third of the mass of the crystal.
A handful of the solid specks, if mixed with the blue blood of flying winged serpents, glows as bright as a torch when blown upon.
They heat up like a torch and on contact with flesh the specks sink, toward the veins, resulting in accelerated necrosis.
If the veins of the hollow bodies are transformed into powder by slow drying and ground in a silver mortar, and then mixed with ground raven bone in a vial of spirit of wine, a strong liquor is created which, for a few minutes, allows to control the will of whoever drinks it.
