A live example of a very elusive specimen, a large one-eyed bird, known by the locals of the village where it was captured as…
Ciafilo
The Ciafilo is a large black and white bird, about the size of a medium-sized dog, with one yellow eye and an astounding crown of feathers that react to sound.
All its feathers have an almost metallic coloration, which gives them certain reflective quality. They are incredibly durable and flexible and even fire does not damage them.
Its beak is of a copper like material, and has six small holes from which a golden steam seems to emanate.
Rumors, tales and testimonies
The people of the far western village, where the Ciafilo was captured, say that the bird is responsible for the strange behavior displayed by the inhabitants of their region in winter.
According to them the bird, fleeing from the cold, is attracted by the warmth of the town, and in its presence, a golden mist begins to overtake the streets. In these strange atmosphere of golden fog, people become extremely emotional, and suicides, love affairs, and quarrels become more common than ever.
The power of this bird has become so well known in the surrounding area that in the coldest weeks of winter, when its presence is most expected, people from other towns travel to this western village, creating a sort of winter festival, attended by artists and enthusiasts in search of the bird's influence. But despite all the people who visit the village, only a few claim to have witnessed it.
Alchemical uses:
A feather of the Ciafilo, if burn in a forge to the melting temperature of copper, can be spread into a hand size, human fingernail thick layer, which, when cooled, it’s as strong as iron, with only a third of its weight.
The crown feathers are thinner and wider than the rest, with finer a longer barbs and barbules, if its quill is inserted into one’s ear, hearing is enhanced. If they are left in the ear for more than a few minutes, they begin to spread roots that become embedded inside the ear. Their removal can be dangerous and cause deafness.
When petted, the Ciafilo begins to exhale a golden steam-like substance.
Breathing this substance exalts one’s emotion.
If it is collected on a cold copper vessel, in a couple of hours it transforms into a bright yellow liquid, of sweet smell and taste.
If drunk cold, a vial of this liquid exalts the emotions, but if drunk hot, it soothes them.
